There are many varieties of June-bearing strawberries which can be categorized by "when in the season" they ripen; early, early mid, mid-season, etc. The duration of each variety of June-bearing strawberry is approximately 10 days to 2 weeks. By planting different varieties Silkey Gardens hopes to extend the picking season and to offer diversity to our customers.
We are still testing to find which varieties are best suited to our farm and to our customers' tastes. Three examples of the eleven varieties that we presently offer are Earliglow, Mesabi and Jewel. Earliglow is our earliest berry, which produces medium, firm, and flavorful fruit. Mesabi is a mid-season berry developed in Minnesota by the University of Minnesota. Its fruit are generally large, firm, scarlet red and have excellent flavor. Jewel is an aptly-named later season berry, with excellent flavor and size. For a complete list of the varieties we are offering this year, see the bottom of this page.
All varieties are available at $1.50/lb.
